ABOUT

Socialist Republic of Vietnam

Cộng hòa Xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam

Cau Giay Park in Ha Noi, Vietnam

Vietnam is one of the most dynamic countries in Southeast Asia and an increasingly important economic partner for Chile. Its history dates back to the agricultural civilizations of the Red River Delta, where rice cultivation developed thousands of years ago. After centuries of Chinese rule and later French colonialism, Vietnam achieved unification in the 19th century and consolidated its independence after the Vietnam War in the 20th century.

In recent decades, the country has undergone a profound economic transformation driven by the Đổi Mới reforms initiated in 1986, which marked the transition to a market economy open to international trade. Today, Vietnam is one of Asia's fastest-growing economies, with sustained development, increasing industrialization, and strong integration into global trade chains.

DEMOGRAPHY

Vietnam currently has a population of approximately 100 million (2025), making it one of the most important markets in Southeast Asia. Its population density exceeds 320 inhabitants per km².
The official language is Vietnamese, although English has rapidly expanded in business and education. Various ethnic minority languages are also spoken.
Life expectancy reaches 75 years, with a literacy rate exceeding 95%. The country has a relatively young population and a growing urban middle class.
In religious terms, traditions linked to Mahayana Buddhism predominate, along with influences from Confucianism and Taoism. There are also Christian communities, mainly Catholic.

CULTURE

Vietnam boasts a rich cultural heritage influenced by ancient Southeast Asian traditions, as well as Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Family and respect for hierarchy are core values in Vietnamese society. Its cities blend historic temples, French colonial architecture, and modern urban centers. Traditional festivals, such as Tết Nguyên Đán (Lunar New Year), are key moments for family reunions and cultural celebration. Music, crafts, and cuisine reflect the country's regional diversity and strong cultural identity.
